Day 1

Welcome to Lima

Arrival in Lima

Welcome to Peru! Touch down in the capital and transfer to your hotel to settle in.

Day 2

Lima city tour & Museo Larco

Miraflores & San Isidro

Begin along the Pacific cliffs, taking in Lima's smart, leafy seaside districts and the wide ocean views.

Huaca Pucllana

Pause at the great pre-Inca adobe pyramid that has survived the city growing up all around it.

Colonial old town

Explore the UNESCO historic centre: the Plaza Mayor, Government Palace and Cathedral, and the Santo Domingo convent that guards the relics of Peru's saints.

Museo Larco

Finish at the Larco Museum and its dazzling pre-Columbian ceramics — including the famous erotic gallery — then return to Larcomar or your hotel.

Day 3

Fly to Chiclayo: Lord of Sipán

Arrival in Chiclayo

Fly north to Chiclayo and transfer to your hotel, with a free morning to rest.

Huaca Rajada

Head out to the great adobe platform of Huaca Rajada, where the world-famous Lord of Sipán was unearthed amid gold and precious stones of the Moche civilisation.

Royal Tombs Museum

Visit the striking Tumbas Reales museum to take in the dazzling treasures and history of the find before returning to Chiclayo.

Day 4

On to Trujillo: Chan Chan

Bus to Trujillo

An early transfer for the scenic three-and-a-half-hour drive down the coast to Trujillo, and on to your hotel.

Chan Chan

In the afternoon, explore the vast adobe city of Chan Chan and its Nik-An palace — ceremonial plazas, reservoirs and funerary platforms carved with high-relief friezes.

Huanchaco

End at the fishing cove of Huanchaco, where reed 'caballitos de totora' boats still ride the surf as they did in Moche times.

Day 5

Moche Valley & night bus to Huaraz

Huaca del Sol & Huaca de la Luna

Tour the Moche Valley temples — the Huaca del Sol, raised with over 100 million adobe bricks, and the beautifully frescoed Huaca de la Luna, six superimposed temples in one.

Museo Huacas de Moche

Visit the site museum to bring the buried Moche city and its artistry to life.

Overnight bus to Huaraz

In the evening, board the night bus climbing into the Cordillera Blanca, sleeping aboard.

Day 6

Callejón de Huaylas & Llanganuco

Arrival in Huaraz

Reach Huaraz (3,300 m) in the morning and set out into the Callejón de Huaylas beneath the Cordillera Blanca and Huascarán, Peru's highest peak at 6,768 m.

Andean villages

Pass pretty highland towns — Carhuaz, with its creamy fruit-milk ice cream — and Yungay, with its poignant memorial to the town buried in the 1970 earthquake.

Llanganuco Lake

Enter Huascarán National Park to reach the turquoise Chinancocha lagoon, ringed by queñua woodland, before returning to Huaraz.

Day 7

Chavín de Huántar & night bus to Lima

Over the Cahuish tunnel

Climb past the 'map of Peru' rock profile and through the Cahuish tunnel (4,550 m) into the Conchucos valley.

Chavín de Huántar

Explore the 3,000-year-old temple of Chavín de Huántar — its tenon heads, the carved Lanzón monolith, underground galleries, ceremonial plazas and the Portico of the Falcons.

Chavín museum & night bus

Visit the modern site museum, then take the evening bus back towards Lima, sleeping aboard.

Day 8

On to Paracas

Fly to Lima

From Huaraz, fly down to Lima and connect to the coastal bus south.

Arrival in Paracas

After around four hours, reach the seaside town of Paracas and transfer to your hotel, with the rest of the day free to relax.

Day 9

Ballestas, Ica wine & Huacachina

Ballestas Islands

Cruise out to the rocky Ballestas Islands to see Humboldt penguins, sea lions, herons and clouds of seabirds.

Tacama winery

Drive on to Ica and the historic Tacama estate, one of the oldest in the Americas, for a typical lunch, a vineyard tour and a sommelier-led tasting of its wines and piscos.

Huacachina oasis & dune buggy

Reach the palm-fringed Huacachina lagoon, the 'oasis of America', for a thrilling buggy ride over towering dunes, then transfer on to Nazca.

Day 10

Nazca Lines & night bus to Arequipa

Flight over the Nazca Lines

Take to the air from the María Reiche aerodrome for a flight over the mysterious Nazca Lines — the condor, the hummingbird, the spider and more etched across the desert.

Overnight bus to Arequipa

In the afternoon, board a comfortable sleeper bus for the long scenic journey south to Arequipa.

Day 11

The White City of Arequipa

Arrival & rest

Arrive at dawn and transfer to your hotel, with a free morning to rest and acclimatise (2,400 m).

Historic centre

In the afternoon, tour the city of white sillar stone — the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral and the Jesuit La Compañía church.

Santa Catalina Monastery

Wander the colourful lanes of the Santa Catalina Monastery, a city within the city and one of Peru's most extraordinary religious monuments.

Yanahuara viewpoint

Visit the colonial Yanahuara district, famed for its Andalusian-style church and its mirador over the volcanoes.

Day 12

Over the altiplano to Colca

Aguada Blanca vicuña reserve

Leave Arequipa past Yura and the Aguada Blanca reserve, watching for wild vicuñas on the altiplano.

Tocra wetlands & Volcano viewpoint

Cross the Tocra wetlands alive with migratory birds and stop at the Mirador de los Volcanes.

Chivay

Reach Chivay in the early afternoon to explore the town and its market, with free time to rest.

Day 13

Condor's flight & on to Puno

Cruz del Cóndor

Drive at dawn to the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint for the depths of the Colca Canyon and the majestic flight of the condors.

Maca & Yanque

Return through the villages of Maca and Yanque and the Antahuilque viewpoint.

Highland crossing to Puno

Cross the high altiplano past stone forests and the 4,538 m Crucero Alto, then the lakes of Lagunillas, reaching Puno (3,800 m) after around six hours.

Day 14

Lake Titicaca: Taquile & Uros

Taquile Island

Sail out across Lake Titicaca by traditional boat to Taquile Island to meet its people and their ancient living traditions.

Lunch at Luquina Chico

Stop at Luquina Chico for a buffet lunch with sweeping lake views.

Uros floating islands

On the way back, visit the famous Uros reed islands that float on the lake itself.

Day 15

Scenic route to Cusco

Pukara & La Raya pass

Take the tourist bus towards Cusco, stopping at the Pukara ceremonial centre and crossing the high La Raya pass amid snow peaks and native wildlife.

Lunch in Sicuani

Pause for lunch and a rest in Sicuani.

Raqchi

Visit Raqchi, the great Inca temple of Wiracocha in stone and adobe.

Andahuaylillas

Step inside the Andahuaylillas church — the 'Sistine Chapel of the Americas', its nave gilded and painted with murals — then reach Cusco around 17:00.

Day 16

Imperial Cusco & Inca ruins

San Cristóbal viewpoint

Begin at the San Cristóbal church for a panoramic balcony over the red-tiled roofs of Cusco.

San Blas & the old town

Walk the Siete Borreguitos lane and the Sapantiana aqueduct through artisan San Blas, past the famous Twelve-Angled Stone, down to the Plaza de Armas.

Cathedral & Qorikancha

In the afternoon, visit the Cathedral and the Qorikancha, the Inca Temple of the Sun once sheathed in gold.

Ruins above the city

Explore the nearby Inca sites of Sacsayhuamán, Q'enqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay.

Day 17

Trek of your choice

Option 1 · Rainbow Mountain

An early start to Vinicunca, then a 90-minute climb to the 5,000 m pass for unforgettable views of the striped Mountain of Colours and Apu Ausangate, with lunch in Pitumarca.

Option 2 · Humantay Lake

An early drive through Limatambo and Mollepata to Soraypampa, then a two-hour hike to the turquoise Humantay Lake (4,200 m) below its glacier, with lunch in Mollepata.

Day 18

Sacred Valley & on to Machu Picchu

Písac ruins & market

Discover the hilltop ruins of Písac and browse its colourful artisan market in the valley below.

Calca, Yucay & Urubamba

Pass the charming valley villages of Calca and Yucay, with a buffet lunch in Urubamba.

Ollantaytambo fortress

Climb the great terraced fortress of Ollantaytambo, with spectacular views down the Sacred Valley.

Evening train to Aguas Calientes

Board the evening Expedition train to Aguas Calientes; dinner included and overnight at the foot of Machu Picchu.

Day 19

Machu Picchu & back to Cusco

Guided tour of the citadel

Ride the bus up the switchbacks for a guided tour of the lost city — its religious, civil and military quarters — one of the seven wonders of the world.

Lunch in Aguas Calientes

Return to Aguas Calientes for an included lunch at your own pace.

Train back to Cusco

In the afternoon, take the train towards Poroy and transfer to your Cusco hotel to rest.

Day 20

Into the Amazon: Puerto Maldonado

Fly & boat to the lodge

Fly to Puerto Maldonado and travel by boat to your jungle lodge, walking forest trails among giant buttressed trees in the Inkaterra reserve — home to record-breaking bird, ant and mammal counts.

Night on the river

After dark, glide along the Madre de Dios river in search of night birds, owls, capybaras and caimans sheltering along the banks.

Day 21

Canopy walkway & river island

Canopy walkway

Climb the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway — seven hanging bridges and eight platforms 38 m above the forest floor — to see the rainforest from its treetops.

River island

Cruise to an uninhabited river island, a haven of transitional forest rich in birdlife, including the prized Amazonian umbrellabird.

Jungle by night

Set out again after dusk to discover the strange creatures that wake with the dark, your senses alive to the sounds of the forest.

Departure

Transfer to the airport

Transfer to Puerto Maldonado airport for your flight to Lima and international connection home.
