Arrival & acclimatisation
Arrive in mountain Huaraz (3,300 m), transfer to your hotel and take the day gently to adjust to the altitude.

Callejón de Huaylas & Llanganuco
Cordillera Blanca & Huascarán
Set out along the Callejón de Huaylas beneath the Cordillera Blanca and Huascarán (6,768 m), Peru's highest peak.
Andean villages
Pass pretty villages like Carhuaz — where you'll taste creamy ice creams of fresh milk and fruit — and Yungay, with its poignant memorial to the town buried in the 1970 quake and avalanche.
Llanganuco lagoon
Enter Huascarán National Park to reach the turquoise Chinancocha lagoon, cradled by queñual forest, before returning to Huaraz.

Chavín de Huántar
Drive to the Conchucos valley
Set off early, spotting the 'map of Peru' rock profile and crossing the Cahuish tunnel (4,550 m) into the Conchucos valley.
Chavín temple
Explore the ancient temple of Chavín de Huántar — the carved tenon heads, the Lanzón monolith, underground galleries, ceremonial plazas and the portal of the falcons.
Site museum
Visit the modern Chavín National Museum before returning to Huaraz.

Pastoruri glacier
Towards Pachacoto
Head south through Recuay, Ticapampa and Catac into the Pachacoto gorge within Huascarán National Park.
Springs & Puya Raimondi
See the fizzing mineral springs of Pumapampa and stands of the giant Puya Raimondi, which can reach 12 metres, amid Andean hummingbirds, vicuñas and perhaps a condor.
Pastoruri glacier
From 4,850 m, walk up to the Pastoruri glacier (5,200 m) to see the ice, fossils and the stark signs of climate change, then return to Huaraz.
