Day 1

Welcome to Lima

Arrival in Lima

Welcome to Peru! Touch down in the capital and transfer to your hotel to settle in.

Day 2

Lima city tour & Museo Larco

Miraflores & San Isidro

Begin along the Pacific cliffs through Lima's smart seaside districts, with wide ocean views.

Huaca Pucllana

Pause at the great pre-Inca adobe pyramid that has survived the city growing up around it.

Colonial old town

Explore the UNESCO historic centre — Plaza Mayor, Government Palace and Cathedral — and the Santo Domingo convent.

Museo Larco

Finish at the Larco Museum and its dazzling pre-Columbian ceramics, then return to Larcomar or your hotel.

Day 3

North to Chiclayo & the Lord of Sipán

Fly to Chiclayo

Fly north to Chiclayo, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a free morning.

Huaca Rajada

Visit the great adobe platform where the world-famous Lord of Sipán tomb was discovered, with its dazzling gold and precious stones.

Royal Tombs Museum

Discover the riches of the Moche civilisation at the superb Royal Tombs of Sipán museum, then return to Chiclayo.

Day 4

Chiclayo to Trujillo & Chan Chan

Bus to Trujillo

Travel south by bus to Trujillo, the elegant 'City of Eternal Spring', and transfer to your hotel.

Chan Chan

Explore the Nik-An palace of Chan Chan, the vast adobe capital of the Chimú — its ceremonial plazas, reservoirs and high-relief friezes.

Huanchaco

Finish at the fishing cove of Huanchaco, where reed boats called caballitos de totora still ride the surf as they have for centuries.

Day 5

Moche temples & overnight to Huaraz

Huacas of the Sun & Moon

Tour the Moche valley temples — the Huaca del Sol, built of over 100 million adobe bricks, and the beautifully painted Huaca de la Luna.

Moche museum

Visit the on-site museum of the Huacas de Moche and the buried city that once lay between the two temples.

Night bus to Huaraz

In the evening, board the overnight bus climbing into the Andes towards Huaraz.

Day 6

Callejón de Huaylas & Llanganuco

Arrival in Huaraz

Arrive in the morning and set out into the Callejón de Huaylas beneath the white peaks of the Cordillera Blanca.

Huascarán & Andean villages

Pass beneath Peru's highest mountain, Huascarán (6,768 m), and pretty towns like Carhuaz and Yungay with its memorial garden.

Laguna Llanganuco

Enter Huascarán National Park to reach the turquoise waters of Llanganuco, cradled by glaciers and queñual groves, then return to Huaraz.

Day 7

Chavín de Huántar

Over the Cahuish pass

Cross the high Cahuish tunnel (4,550 m) into the Conchucos valley, with the 'map of Peru' rock profile along the way.

Chavín temple

Explore one of the Andes' oldest ceremonial centres — the carved tenon heads, the Lanzón monolith, underground galleries and stairways.

Night bus to Lima

Visit the modern Chavín museum, then board the overnight bus back to Lima.

Day 8

Down the coast to Paracas

Fly Huaraz onward to Lima

Transfer for the flight to Lima and connect to the tourist bus heading south down the coast.

Arrival in Paracas

Reach the seaside town of Paracas after about four hours and transfer to your hotel for a restful afternoon by the ocean.

Day 9

Ballestas, Ica wine & Huacachina

Ballestas Islands

Set out by boat to the wildlife-rich islands to spot Humboldt penguins, sea lions, herons and other seabirds.

Tacama winery

Drive to Ica and tour the historic Tacama vineyard, with a typical lunch and a sommelier-led tasting of its wines and piscos.

Huacachina oasis & buggies

Visit the palm-fringed 'Oasis of America' and race across the towering dunes by buggy.

On to Nazca

Continue to Nazca for the night.

Day 10

Nazca Lines & overnight to Arequipa

Flight over the Nazca Lines

Take to the air from the María Reiche airfield to trace the mysterious desert figures — the condor, hummingbird, spider and more (weather permitting).

Bus to Arequipa

Board the comfortable overnight sleeper bus for the long, scenic journey to Arequipa.

Day 11

Arequipa, the White City

Arrival & rest

Arrive at dawn and transfer to your hotel for a relaxed morning to acclimatise.

Historic centre

Tour the Plaza de Armas, Cathedral and the Jesuit church of La Compañía, all built of gleaming white sillar stone.

Santa Catalina Monastery

Wander the colourful lanes of the Santa Catalina convent, a city within the city and one of Peru's most striking monuments.

Yanahuara viewpoint

Visit the colonial district of Yanahuara, with its Andalusian-style arches and views over the valley to the volcanoes.

Day 12

Over the altiplano to Colca

Aguada Blanca reserve

Cross the high vicuña reserve and the Tocra wetlands, alive with migratory birds.

Volcano viewpoint

Stop at the Mirador de los Volcanes to take in the great snow-capped peaks of the altiplano.

Chivay

Arrive in Chivay for lunch and a stroll through its town and market before settling in for the night.

Day 13

Cruz del Cóndor & on to Puno

Cruz del Cóndor

Set out early to the famous lookout over the deep Colca Canyon to watch majestic condors ride the morning thermals.

Maca & Yanque

Return through the traditional villages of Maca and Yanque and the Antahuilque viewpoint.

Crossing to Puno

Drive across the high altiplano past Crucero Alto (4,538 m) and the stone forests to the lakeside city of Puno.

Day 14

Lake Titicaca — Taquile & the Uros

Taquile Island

Sail across the deep blue lake to Taquile, famed for its ancestral traditions and fine handwoven textiles.

Lunch at Luquina Chico

Enjoy a buffet lunch in a lakeside community before turning back towards Puno.

Uros floating islands

In the afternoon, step onto the remarkable reed islands of the Uros, hand-built and afloat on the lake.

Day 15

Scenic route Puno to Cusco

Pukará & La Raya pass

Travel by tourist bus, stopping at the Pukará ceremonial terraces and the high La Raya pass amid snow peaks and grazing herds.

Raqchi temple

After lunch in Sicuani, explore Raqchi, the great Inca temple of Wiracocha in stone and adobe.

Andahuaylillas church

Visit the 'Sistine Chapel of the Americas', its baroque nave glowing with murals and gold leaf, before reaching Cusco.

Day 16

Imperial Cusco & Inca ruins

San Cristóbal & San Blas

Walk the San Cristóbal viewpoint and the artisan San Blas quarter — the Siete Borreguitos lane, the Sapantiana aqueduct and the Twelve-Angled Stone.

Cathedral & Qorikancha

In the afternoon, step inside the Cathedral and the Qorikancha — the Inca Temple of the Sun once sheathed in gold.

Ruins above the city

Explore the nearby Inca sites of Sacsayhuamán, Q'enqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay.

Day 17

Trek of your choice

Option 1: Rainbow Mountain

An early start to Vinicunca for a 1.5-hour climb to the 5,000 m pass and breathtaking views of the striped Rainbow Mountain and Apu Ausangate, with lunch in Pitumarca.

Option 2: Humantay Lake

Or drive to Soraypampa for a two-hour climb to the glacial Laguna Humantay (4,200 m) beneath the Apu Humantay, with lunch in Mollepata.

Return to Cusco

Return to your Cusco hotel in the late afternoon.

Day 18

Sacred Valley & on to Machu Picchu

Písac ruins & market

Discover the hilltop ruins of Písac and browse its colourful artisan market in the valley below.

Calca, Yucay & Urubamba

Pass the charming valley villages of Calca and Yucay, with a buffet lunch in Urubamba.

Ollantaytambo fortress

Climb the great terraced fortress of Ollantaytambo, with spectacular views down the Sacred Valley.

Evening train to Aguas Calientes

Board the evening Expedition train to Aguas Calientes; dinner included and overnight at the foot of Machu Picchu.

Day 19

Machu Picchu & back to Cusco

Guided tour of the citadel

Ride the bus up the switchbacks for a guided tour of the lost city — its religious, civil and military quarters — one of the seven wonders of the world.

Lunch in Aguas Calientes

Return to Aguas Calientes for an included lunch at your own pace.

Scenic train to Cusco

In the afternoon, take the train back to Poroy and transfer to your Cusco hotel to rest.

Departure

Transfer to the airport

Transfer to Cusco airport for your flight back to Lima or onward journey.
