Day 1

Welcome to Lima

Arrival in Lima

Welcome to Peru! Touch down in the capital and transfer to your hotel to settle in.

Day 2

Lima city tour & Museo Larco

Miraflores & San Isidro

Set out along the Pacific cliffs through Lima's smart, leafy seaside districts with wide ocean views.

Huaca Pucllana

Pause at the great pre-Inca adobe pyramid, a ceremonial temple that has survived the city growing up around it.

Colonial old town

Explore the UNESCO historic centre — Plaza de Armas, Government Palace and Cathedral — and the Santo Domingo convent that guards the relics of Peru's saints.

Museo Larco

Finish at the Larco Museum and its dazzling collection of pre-Columbian ceramics, including the famous erotic gallery, then return to Larcomar or your hotel.

Day 3

Lima to Paracas & the Ballestas Islands

Drive to Paracas

Early morning coach south along the coast to Paracas, about four hours from Lima.

Ballestas Islands cruise

Set out by boat to the Ballestas Islands, alive with Humboldt penguins, sea lions, herons and seabirds.

Paracas National Reserve

Tour the reserve and the little Julio C. Tello museum, then the Cathedral rock rising from the sea and the Red Beach with its strange crimson sands.

Day 4

Paracas, Ica & the Huacachina oasis

Drive to Ica

Private transfer to Ica, an hour from Paracas, in the heart of the desert.

Huacachina oasis

Reach the palm-fringed lagoon known as the Oasis of America, ringed by towering golden dunes.

Dune buggy ride

Race across the Ica dunes by buggy, with free time to lunch before continuing on to Nazca by evening.

Day 5

Nazca Lines flight & on to Arequipa

Flight over the Nazca Lines

Transfer to the María Reiche aerodrome for a light-aircraft flight over the mysterious desert figures — the condor, hummingbird, spider and more (weather permitting).

Overnight coach to Arequipa

Board a comfortable reclining sleeper bus for the long, scenic journey to Arequipa.

Day 6

White-city Arequipa & Santa Catalina

Arrival & rest

Reach Arequipa at dawn and transfer to your hotel for a morning to rest and acclimatise.

Historic centre

Tour the Plaza de Armas, City Hall, Cathedral and the Jesuit church of La Compañía, all built from gleaming white sillar stone.

Santa Catalina Monastery

Wander the painted lanes of one of Peru's most striking religious monuments, a city within a city.

Yanahuara & viewpoints

Visit the Andalusian-style Yanahuara district and its viewpoint, the farming terraces of Carmen Alto and leafy Selva Alegre.

Day 7

Arequipa to the Colca Valley

Vicuña reserve & altiplano

Drive past Yura and the Aguada Blanca vicuña reserve, crossing the Tocra wetlands rich with migratory birds.

Volcano viewpoint

Stop at the Mirador de los Volcanes for sweeping views across the high Andes.

Chivay village

Arrive in Chivay for lunch and a stroll through the town and its market before settling in.

Day 8

Cruz del Cóndor & on to Puno

Cruz del Cóndor

Early start to the famous lookout over the deep Colca Canyon to watch majestic condors ride the morning thermals.

Colca villages

Visit the villages of Maca and Yanque and the Antahuilque viewpoint on the way back to Chivay.

High road to Puno

Cross the wild altiplano past stone-forest formations and Crucero Alto (4,538 m), then the Lagunillas lakes, reaching Puno after about six hours.

Day 9

Lake Titicaca — Taquile & the Uros

Taquile Island

Cruise out across Lake Titicaca to Taquile, meeting a community that keeps its ancestral weaving traditions alive.

Lunch at Luquina Chico

Stop for a buffet lunch on the lakeshore before turning back to Puno.

Uros floating islands

Visit the famous reed islands of the Uros, hand-built from totora and floating on the lake.

Day 10

Andean route from Puno to Cusco

Pukara & La Raya

Travel north by tourist coach via the Pukara ceremonial terraces and the La Raya pass, the high point of the route amid snow-capped peaks.

Lunch in Sicuani

Pause for lunch and a rest in Sicuani before continuing into the Cusco region.

Raqchi temple

Explore Raqchi, the great stone-and-adobe temple of the god Wiracocha.

Andahuaylillas church

Step into the gilded 'Sistine Chapel of the Americas', a jewel of mestizo baroque, before reaching Cusco by late afternoon.

Day 11

Imperial Cusco & Inca ruins

San Cristóbal viewpoint

Head up to the San Cristóbal church for a panoramic balcony over the red-tiled roofs of Cusco.

San Blas & old town

Walk the Siete Borreguitos lane, the Sapantiana aqueduct, the artisan Plaza San Blas, the Twelve-Angled Stone and down to the monumental Plaza de Armas.

Cathedral & Qorikancha

In the afternoon, step inside the Cathedral and the Qorikancha, the Inca Temple of the Sun once sheathed in gold.

Ruins above the city

Explore the Inca sites of Sacsayhuamán, Q'enqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay before returning to your hotel.

Day 12

Your choice of mountain trek

Option 1 · Rainbow Mountain

Pre-dawn pickup and drive to Vinicunca for a 1.5-hour climb to the 5,000 m pass, with stunning views of the striped mountain and Apu Ausangate, then lunch in Pitumarca.

Option 2 · Humantay Lake

Early transfer to Soraypampa, then a two-hour hike to the turquoise Humantay Lake (4,200 m) beneath its glacier, with lunch in Mollepata on the way back to Cusco.

Day 13

Sacred Valley & on to Machu Picchu

Písac ruins & market

Discover the hilltop ruins of Písac and browse its colourful artisan market in the valley below.

Calca, Yucay & Urubamba

Pass the charming valley villages of Calca and Yucay, with a buffet lunch in Urubamba.

Ollantaytambo fortress

Climb the great terraced fortress of Ollantaytambo, with spectacular views down the valley.

Evening train to Aguas Calientes

Board the evening Expedition train to Aguas Calientes; dinner included and overnight at the foot of Machu Picchu.

Day 14

Machu Picchu & back to Cusco

Guided tour of the citadel

Ride the bus up the switchbacks for a guided tour of the lost city — its religious, civil and military quarters — one of the seven wonders of the world.

Lunch in Aguas Calientes

Return to Aguas Calientes for an included lunch at your own pace.

Train back to Cusco

In the afternoon, take the train to Poroy and transfer to your Cusco hotel to rest.

Departure

Transfer to the airport

At leisure until your transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima or onward journey.
